Should You Buy Travel Insurance?
The holiday travel season is around the corner and according to Consumer Reports, the demand for insurance to go along with those trips has more than doubled since last year's terrorist attacks.
Consumer reporter Becky Thompson teams up with Consumer Reports with information you need to know before you buy a travel insurance policy.
A comprehensive travel insurance policy will add another 6 percent to the cost of your trip. Before you buy find out specifically what you're covered for.
Minda Sese is a world traveler, who like many is more cautious these days.
"During the time when there is, like terrorism, and all that kind of events, then we either put it off or get travel insurance," Sese says.
She got travel insurance for a recent trip to China, so she could get a refund if she had to cancel.
Consumer Reports says you should check insurance companies' Web sites for policy details, and carefully read the fine print.
Bill McGee, Consumer Reports travel letter, says, "One of the most important things you should look for is trip interruption cancellation insurance. That will protect you if you or a family member gets sick or for any reason you can't take the trip."
Be sure you're covered if there's a terrorist attack in the country you're visiting. Be sure you're covered for "supplier default" in case the company you book with goes out of business.
"We found that not all travel companies, particularly some airlines and cruise lines, are covered with supplier default. So it's important to know if your companies are covered," McGee said.
Health problems? Be sure to avoid a policy that has a "pre-existing conditions exclusion".
Because travel insurance is so pricey, Consumer Reports says its best used for expensive trips, like going overseas.
