Fresh Thinking, Healthy Eating At Pita Pit Downtown

POSTED: 6:19 pm EDT April 30, 2008

Its lunch time and the Pita Pit on Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh is packed.

But I quickly learned that fast food doesn’t have to mean processed food.

“The Pita Pit’s motto is fresh thinking healthy eating and we try to stick by that. All of our veggies are prepped every single morning. All of our meats are sliced every morning. We use the healthiest, freshest ingredients we can get our hands on,” said franchisee Ben Gordon.

The ingredients are placed right where you can see them. It’s all part of the ordering process.

“It’s fresh; it’s prepared right in front of you. We work with you to make it how you want it to be made so you don’t have to take anything off. If you don’t like tomatoes or onions you don’t have to put it on. You can have your food exactly how you want it,” explained employee Kelly McDaniel.

So you can have your food how you want it, but the Pita Pit gives you some exciting choices to start with.

“Our most popular pitas are the buffalo chicken, chicken cesar, and the falafel is very popular too. Our local pita is chicken, ham and pineapple all cooked together in a teriyaki sauce,” said Gordon.

With so many great choices, it’s no wonder the Pita Pit has lots of loyal customers.

“It’s convenient, healthy, good, addicting, you’ll come back for more,” said customer Leslie Harris.

“A friend of mine introduced me to this place a couple months ago. I’m probably twice a week here, and I brought a couple other people too. Its right around the corner, everything’s fresh, and it’s delicious. I like falafel, and they have some of the best falafel in Pittsburgh, maybe the best,” said customer Mark Tilly.

If you can’t make it in to the restaurant the Pita Pit offers free delivery.

“We do deliver, everywhere downtown, mostly on foot. We also do catering for offices or parties, anything like that. We have pita platters and veggie platters,” said Gordon.

And the Pita Pit isn’t just for lunch.

“We are open for breakfast. All of our breakfast pitas have scrambled eggs, home fries, grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms if you want them, cheese and sauce. And then a variety of meats to choose from,” explained Gordon.

“We are open early, we’re open late, and we’re open Saturday and Sunday downtown,” he said.
