'Potter' Star's Nude Play In Sales Slump

Radcliffe Slated To Star In 'Equus' Through Early February

Posted: 9:25 am EST November 19, 2008

Interest appears to be on the decline in "Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe's Broadway debut -- a controversial play in which the actor appears nude.

According to Broadway World online, ticket sales for "Equus" have been uneven since the play debuted in September at New York City's Broadhurst Theater, and in a steep decline in the last three weeks.

The Web site reported that only 5,484 of the available 9,648 seats were sold for the week ending Nov. 16 -- which is 56.8 percent capacity of the week's eight performances. Last week the show sold 61.1 percent of its available tickets and the week before, 60.4 percent of its capacity.

Despite the controversy over Radcliffe's decision to take on the full-frontal role last year, "Equus" was still a critical and audience hit during its run on London's West End. In the play, Radcliffe, 19, stars as a troubled stable boy who at one point appears naked on stage.

Broadway World reported that the top ticket for "Equus" sells for $300, and the average ticket runs in the $90 range.

In its opening two performances in September, "Equus" sold 93.4 percent of its tickets. In the following weeks, the sales fluctuated in the 70-80 percent range with an occasion dip as low as 65 percent.

"Equus" is scheduled to run on Broadway through Feb. 8.

The latest installment in the "Potter" movie franchise, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," is due in theaters next July.
