Professor Wrestling: Do The Right Thing

Bottom Line Items As The Boom Approaches

Posted: 11:05 am EDT September 23, 2005

Listen up! Class is in session. This week, a little lecture about doing the right thing.

Ric Flair Wins WWE Intercontinental Title
This was the right thing to do. Flair, the greatest grappler of all time, was looking bad losing week in, week out. I felt sorry for the guy. This way, at least he has a bit of prestige. Or more accurately, he gives prestige to a second-tier championship belt. Now I realize this isn't going to last for more than a few weeks or months, but along the way WWE can use Flair to help teach younger wrestlers how to have a compelling match. I know he's already been doing that in recent months, but at least he can do it a bit of gold around his waist. And when this is done, could we please reunite the Four Horsemen, with a retired Flair as its manager? That would be tremendous.

WWE "Raw" Moves To USA, TNA "Impact" Moves To Spike
Wrestling is a cyclical boom-or-bust business, and to be honest right now it's in a bit of a bust cycle. That, I think, is going to change this fall. Why? Competition. Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, the nation's No. 2 promotion, is moving its weekly "Impact" show to Spike TV, the former home of WWE "Raw." "Raw," meanwhile, heads to its old TV home, the USA network. In effect, both shows get fresh starts. If the writers of both of these shows had a modicum of common sense -- or skill -- they'd use this opportunity to create fresh, dynamic storylines mixing established stars with newcomers. TNA, in my opinion, has been doing a better job of this than WWE in recent months, especially with its X-Division. WWE, however, still has a strong talent roster, a rich history and more production dollars. That adds up to Vince's crew having no excuse not to thrill us in the weeks ahead.

Women's Wrestling
When I was a kid, if a female wrestler happened to be attractive -- it was the exception, not the rule. These days, if a lady grappler isn't perfect from head to toe (through cosmetic surgery or not) she doesn't get on the air. I can accept the beauty quotient, but can't the writers do something interesting with these performers? While some of the performers display a bit of wrestling skill, by and large the division hasn't had a quality storyline in decades. It's just one endless catfight and that's it. Call me crazy, but I think a lot of talent is being wasted. It's time for equal time.

Triple H
Hunter Hearst Helmsley is returning to WWE action in a few weeks. WWE, please don't put a title belt on him right now. Let him enjoy a year of grudge matches. He doesn't need to be a champion. There are other performers who should get title runs. Just because he's married to the boss' daughter doesn't mean he should be the perennial poster boy for the promotion.

Hurricanes
Doing the right thing. This weekend, the Gulf Coast will get hammered hard by Hurricane Rita. Once again people will need your financial support and prayers. Please do the right thing and help any way you can. Thanks in advance.

That's it! Class dismissed!
