Preview: South Park High School rehearses 'The Sound of Music'

South Park High School is performing “The Sound of Music” this year.

“I believe the musical choice gave a lot of new people a chance to show what they can do and gave other people a chance to try out roles that are different,” said junior Alexis Hawk, who is playing Maria.

Senior Sean Kayton, who has the role of Captain Von Trapp, was glad his director, Josh Baker, chose a popular show that audiences will likely enjoy.

“It’s a familiar musical to most people and has many memorable songs,” said Kayton.

To perform some of those memorable songs, Kayton must learn how to play the guitar.

“This instrument is new to me, but it’s a doable challenge,” said Kayton.

Baker is proud of the students’ hard work.

“My favorite thing about the cast this year is their dedication to their respective parts,” he said.

Baker has been directing South Park’s musicals for seven years.

“I enjoy helping the kids discover things about themselves,” said Baker.

The students appreciate Baker’s encouragement.  They also thank their peers for their support.

“Everyone is great to work with since they’re serious about their parts,” said Hawk.

“Everyone is easy and fun to work with,” said Kayton.

South Park’s production of “The Sound of Music” will run April 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for children, students and seniors.   For ticket information, email southparkdramaclub@yahoo.com or call 412-655-4900.
