'New Amsterdam:' Pittsburgh's inside look

"New Amsterdam" premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 on WPXI.

"New Amsterdam" is about to give other medical shows a run for their money.

Inspired by Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in America, this new medical drama is already taking people by storm. It follows the intelligent and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director who makes it his goal to disrupt the bureaucracy of medical care in our country and make doctors “be doctors again.”

How can he help? This quickly becomes a common theme as Dr. Goodwin makes strides to push everyone in the hospital to be better and makes it clear that he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital. Can New Amsterdam Hospital get its glory restored and put it back on the map as the GREAT hospital it used to be under the supervision of this ambitious new medical director?

Throughout the first episode you see that it will take some time for everyone to come around, especially after his slightly aggressive introduction to the employees. You’ll know what I mean about his aggressive style once you see it for yourself, but this will be just one of the many changes to come at the hospital.

"New Amsterdam" premieres at 10 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 25, after the return of “This is Us.”

Meet the Doctors: Dr. Max Goodwin

Pittsburgh's Nicole Jelinek meets Ryan Eggold who plays Dr. Max Goodwin in "New Amsterdam."

Ryan Eggold is better known for his more action-packed spy character, Tom Keen off of the Blacklist, but he has changed gears and will now be saving lives in NBC's newest medical drama, "New Amsterdam."

Eggold is set to star as Dr. Max Goodwin—the brilliant and determined new medical director at America's oldest public hospital, New Amsterdam. Goodwin quickly accepts the challenge to fix the system and makes it his goal to help change the pace of the hospital and provide exceptional care—despite the uncertainty of the other residents and staff. How can he help? Will he return the beloved hospital back to the glory it once had? These are all questions that will be answered quickly in this new series.

Meet the Doctors: Dr. Floyd Reynolds

Pittsburgh's Nicole Jelinek sits down with Jocko Sims who plays the attending cardiac surgeon on "New Amsterdam," Dr. Floyd Reynolds.

In the show, Dr. Reynolds is an ambitious young doctor who is very passionate about his work-- and this doesn't go unnoticed. He is quickly given the chance to go full steam ahead within his role when the new Medical Director Dr. Max Goodwin arrives and gives him an opportunity of a lifetime.

Meet the Doctors: Dr. Helen Sharpe

Pittsburgh's Nicole Jelinek sits down with Freema Agyeman who plays Dr. Helen Sharpe in “New Amsterdam.”

In the show, Sharpe plays a doctor who is really eating up her “fame.” She likes to jet around the world to do appearances and live the celebrity lifestyle instead of staying at the hospital to practice medicine.

Because there have been five new medical directors over the last 5 years in the hospital it has been easy for her to take advantage of doing those things, but Dr. Max Goodwin is about to give her a run for her money and try to get her involved with the great hospital that is in need of some change, New Amsterdam.

Meet the Doctors: Dr. Iggy Frome, Dr. Vijay Kapoor

It is a double dose of doctors as Nicole sits down with TWO more of the “New Amsterdam” stars— Tyler Labine and Anupam Kher!

First up: Labine.

Labine usually takes on more comedic roles, but when he saw the script wasn’t JUST another ‘boring’ medical drama, he jumped right in—and now plays the head of child psychology Dr. Iggy Frome.

Next up: Kher.

If you didn’t know, he is one of India’s most prominent actors appearing in over 100 plays and 500 films there… so why “New Amsterdam?”

He not only wanted a personal challenge of him doing a show in the English language, but said that based off the characters and scripts, this was going to be HUGE. So, now he has made his way to New York and is playing neurologist Dr.Vijay Kapoor in the new series.

Both actors play similar doctors given that they aren’t as involved with the surgery aspect, but they understand the human nature aspect more. The two grasp onto the human nature part, making them mesh the most with the new medical director’s main objective of, “How can I help?” They are going to be two to add a some comedy into the show and grab your attention from the start!
