Never intended as one of the original regional parks, Hartwood Acres presented a sudden opportunity for the county in 1969 when the owner of the beautiful Hartwood estate, Mary Flinn Lawrence, offered the property to the county at a very reasonable price-- providing that development would not take place near her home until after her death.

Hartwood has an outdoor amphitheater on the western side of the property and the horse trails are still used for riding as well as walking. There are no picnic groves or other recreational and sports facilities--this is a park that provides cultural services.
