Once in the body both red meat and the drinks have an ingredient that transforms into a compound called Carnitine.
Researchers think once in the body Carnitine is transformed into TMAO, a substance that causes the walls of the arteries to thicken, leading to heart disease.
This new information doesn’t change that fact that cholesterol and fat are still bad for you. Doctors say this is just one more building block in the understanding of the number one killer in America and how to fight it.
"Cholesterol is still needed to clog the arteries, but TMAO changes how cholesterol is metabolized, like the dimmer on a light switch," one researcher noted.
As you might expect the energy drink industry doesn’t agree with the findings, calling it "questionable."
