Bengals sign Josh Johnson, taking one more QB off the market

Late yesterday, the Cincinnati Bengals came to terms with Josh Johnson on a two-year contract to be Andy Dalton's backup. Johnson spent 2012 with the Cleveland Browns after losing the 49ers third QB battle to Scott Tolzien in training camp. Prior to that he spent his career in Tampa Bay after playing for Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego.

I bring this up in part because the 49ers still need some kind of quarterback, and Josh Johnson has been a frequent mention here. The 49ers have Colin Kaepernick locked in at No. 1, and then have Scott Tolzien as something of a No. 2 or No. 3. Unfortunately we don't really know what the team thinks of Tolzien. They liked him enough to keep him around the last two years, but that's all we know.

It is entirely possible the 49ers are confident enough in him to let him be Kaepernick's backup. That being said, we know that one of Jim Harbaugh's favorites phrases is "iron sharpens iron." We know that the 49ers will bring in another quarterback, if not two. The question remains, where will they get that quarterback.

Free agency has a few options left, but if the 49ers want to find somebody who can run some pistol and some read option, the remaining free agents are not really options.

If the 49ers decide to not sign any of the current veteran free agents, when would they then draft a QB to compete with Tolzien? Even if Tolzien is locked in as the No. 2 quarterback, this team will add at least one more quarterback. That quarterback is not guaranteed to make the 53-man roster, but there will be at least one, if not two other quarterbacks coming to training camp.

Given that, what is the highest you see the 49ers drafting a quarterback in April? If you think they'll add two rookie quarterbacks, pick the round you could see them grabbing the first quarterback.

Poll
If the 49ers do not sign a veteran free agent QB, when is the highest they draft another QB to compete with Scott Tolzien?
