PITTSBURGH -- The Going Green movement has bottled water coming under scrutiny as cities across the country are turning to the tap.Bottled water has been banned from city offices in San Francisco and is now the subject of a $700,000 ad campaign in New York City.Although bottled water may be good for your health, the bottles are bad for the environment."Bottled water is an environmental loser in just about every way you look at it...in its manufacture and in its disposal," said Dr. Alan Hershowitz, National Resources Defense Council.Up to 3 gallons of water is contaminated for every pint bottle that is made. The industry said it has reduced the plastic resin in the bottles and is starting a pilot program to encourage recycling.Pittsburgh's City Council president said there are no plans to ban bottled water, saying Pittsburgh is not a bottled water town.Although most restaurants offer it, many customers drink tap water.Learn more from WPXI.com's Going Green section.
