AAA Collecting Car, Truck, Boat And Motorcycle Batteries
Ready to recycle those old car batteries stored in your garage? In commemoration of Earth Day, AAA East Central will collect lead-acid car, truck, boat and motorcycle batteries and pay you a “bounty” in return.All you need to do is take any of the qualifying batteries to Jeff Crichlow Auto Body, 1798 Babcock Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You’ll receive $8 for each battery, up to a three battery limit, or you can donate your “bounty” to the Western PA Conservancy.It makes dollars and sense to recycle car batteries, which contain lead that is 97 percent recyclable. “Some of these old batteries are being illegally disposed of in dumpsters, or are simply placed in consumer’s garages, yards or storage sheds awaiting disposal,” said Steve Popovich, Director of the Automotive Services Department at AAA East Central. “AAA wants to encourage more people to take the extra and responsible step of getting these batteries to a recycling center.”How to Safely Transport Your Batteries:1. AAA recommends that consumers wear gloves and safety glasses when handling batteries.2. Keep batteries in a sturdy box or plastic container when transporting them for recycling.3. If the battery case is cracked or leaking, choose and use a leak-proof container.4. Don’t smoke near or expose the batteries to an open flame.5. Make sure batteries will not shift and tip over in a moving vehicle.Source: AAA East Central
