PITTSBURGH -- Steve Cunningham a local tannning salon owner is very aware of the dangers of tanning.

Cunningham said, “Every since we opened we've considered it our responsibility, our chance, to let people know it's not necessary to tan every day. Everybody is different, everybody responds differently to ultra violet light. You have to take a responsible approach.”

Cunningham says many people would tan everyday if they could, something he discourages.

“Sometimes tanning every day isn’t the right choice. We have memberships here not unlimited packages. We give you the most of your tanning membership by advising you the maximum you should go. Our goal is to achieve the best tan, not the most visits.” Cunningham said.

Right now the Pennsylvania State Senate is considering a bill that would require anyone under 18 to have parental permission to tan at a salon.

That is something Cunningham and other responsible salons already require.

Cunningham said, “They have to have a parent present. If mom and dad don’t know what is going on they can't have an opinion on what's good or bad for their son or daughter. Anybody under the age of 18 has to have parental consent."

Shannon Genday, a 19-year old diagnosed with melanoma, worked at a tanning salon and tanned several times a week.

She thinks teens could get around the parental consent rule.

"I think parents are naive about the whole thing. Once a kid is 16 and has a car their parents aren't going to know everything. I worked there (at a salon), but I wouldn't tell them I’d stay after and go tanning for free all the time,” Genday said.

So when it comes to tanning, Cunningham still believes many people can tan safely.

“Everybody is different. Some people should avoid the sun entirely, other people can tan moderately. The best thing is to consult your doctor.”
