Lawsuits Question UPMC Test Results

Suits Claims False Pap Smear Results

Separate lawsuits have raised questions about the validity of thousands of medical tests for women at UPMC hospitals.

What should people do if they've had an exam there? Women who are concerned about the outcome of their Pap smears should call their physician.

Lisa Simomic recently had a Pap test, and she is one of many women in the area wanting to know if their Pap test, one she just had, was done at Magee-Women's Hospital.

"Should I retake it? Is it possible I could have a positive one and it came out negative because they weren't reading it properly?" Simomic said.

A proposed class action lawsuit against Magee, the UPMC Health System and two physicians has been filed on behalf of "women whose Pap smear slides were processed, and for whom Pap smear results were reported, by the pathology laboratory at Magee-Women's Hospital between 1995 and (now) the present."

It alleges that "during that time, defendants knowingly and intentionally misled plaintiffs, the class members and the medical community by issuing Pap smear reports bearing physicians' names in cases (which were) never reviewed by a physician."

A Pap smear is a diagnostic procedure where cells are removed from the cervix for microscopic examination to detect gynecological cancers and precancerous conditions.

Linda Rummel had her last Pap test done at Magee.

"We have a history of cancers in our family so I'd want to make sure everything was on the up and up and everything was done properly. I don't want to (be) thrown aside like another number," she said.

Rummel said if she finds the case includes her test, she'll ask for another. The question is, will it be covered?

If a woman's physician recommends it, UPMC Health Insurance said it will cover the cost. Highmark Blue Cross, Blue Shield said the same thing; as did Aetna, as long your policy covers preventive care.
