As any parent who's had a medical emergency in the middle of the night knows, a good pediatrician can be a lifesaver. Finding one, however, can be difficult.
Basil Zitelli, MD

Channel 11 News surveyed hundreds of physicians in Allegheny County to find out who they would recommend in five different medical specialties.

Friday, Channel 11 News announced which Pittsburgh area doctor was most highly recommended in the field of pediatrics.

Dr. Basil Zitelli, a 25-year veteran at Children's Hospital, was the most recommended pediatrician.

Area doctors refer to Zitelli as the pediatrician's pediatrician. He is the go-to guy for doctors who have questions about their patients' illness.

Zitelli is an expert in pediatrics, teaching residents in Pittsburgh and around the world through the numerous text books he's written.

Stephanie Nobotny has had three disabled children, all of whom were patients of Zitelli's.

Nobotny’s son, Joey, 4, has a long list of medical problems that are ongoing and complicated. His conditions would boggle the mind of many doctors, but not Zitelli.

"If Dr. Zitelli doesn't figure it out, he finds somebody to figure it out," said Nobotny.

According to Zitelli, a lot of things are needed to make a good pediatrician.

Zitelli said you must have compassion and a sense of feeling for the child and the entire family. He said it is very important to understand that the family is really the patient.

Zitelli said unlike other doctors, pediatricians must use all five senses to help diagnose, looking carefully at children, listening to them and reading body language.

Family doctors can treat most childhood illnesses but, referral at the right time, and access to a children's hospital can be life saving. At Children's Hospital, insurance or not, kids are not turned away.

"The amount of money we get does not cover anywhere near the amount of free care that we provide," said Zitelli.

Community support has helped with those costs, but Zitelli said more could be done. "It certainly would be wonderful if some of the corporations within our environment would be able to provide additional support for the hospital and for programs," said Zitelli.

Zitelli said you should have a pediatrician who not only takes an interest in your child and your family, but is willing to refer when tougher questions need to be answered.

Zitelli is available through physician referral only.

Monday, find out who was the most recommended Obstetrics/Gynecologist in the Pittsburgh area.

The following physicians were runner-ups for most recommended pediatrician in the Pittsburgh area:

2. Dr. Sara McIntire

2. Dr. Jane Breck

3. Dr. James Tucker

3. Dr. Michael Forbes
