PITTSBURGH -- Crossing counties to have a smoke is now a reality as the Allegheny County Council voted to snuff out smoking in public places Tuesday.Councilmembers voted 14-1 Tuesday night to pass the smoking ban, which prohibits smoking in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants. The proposed legislation calls for a ban on smoking within 15 feet of any building's entrance or exit. Smoking is also banned on subway platforms, pool halls and bowling alleys.Specialty tobacco stores, private homes and some hotel rooms would be exempt from the ban.People across the area have mixed reactions to the new legislation. The smoking ban could go into effect within 90 days of Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato's signature.County Executive Dan Onorato has seven days to sign the bill - veto it - allow it to become law without his signature.Channel 11 was unable to get a response from Onorato overnight. But, on Monday, Onoroto said, “I'm keeping an open mind. I want to see the bill they send me. If they riddle it with exceptions, and you create an uneven playing field, I'd have problems with that.”Watch Channel 11 tonight and stay with WPXI.com for reaction from local businesses and people.
