Tigers, Bonderman Shoot For Sweep Of Mariners
(Sports Network) - Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman can snap a three-start winless skid today when the Detroit Tigers host the Seattle Mariners in the third and final game of a series at Comerica Park.Bonderman was 2-2 in six starts to begin the season before dropping consecutive decisions to Boston and the New York Yankees on May 5 and May 10. He got a no-decision in his most recent outing, a 4-3 Tigers loss to Arizona in an interleague matchup on May 16. In those three starts, Bonderman has allowed 16 hits and 12 runs in 16 innings. He is 4-3 in eight lifetime starts against the Mariners with a 5.01 earned run average in 46 2/3 innings, but is winless in five home starts this season. Seattle right-hander Miguel Batista has been hit hard in three straight outings. The 27-year-old is 1-2 in those starts, but has seen his ERA swell from 4.41 to 6.11 while he's allowed 22 hits and 15 runs in just 13 innings. His best outing of the month came May 1 at Cleveland, when he gave up just four hits and a run in seven innings, getting a tough-luck no-decision in the Mariners' 3-2 loss. Batista is 1-3 with two saves and a 4.54 ERA against the Tigers in nine career appearances, including five starts. On Wednesday, Marcus Thames' grand slam highlighted a seven- run third inning, as the Tigers downed the Mariners, 9-4. Kenny Rogers (4-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win. Zach Miner and Francisco Cruceta did not allow a hit in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Brandon Inge doubled, tripled and knocked in two runs for the Tigers, who have won three of their last four games. Ivan Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Guillen each had an RBI. Jarrod Washburn (2-6) lasted only 2 1/3 innings for Seattle, giving up nine runs on 12 hits. Ryan Rowland-Smith and Cha Seung Baek combined to allow only two hits in 5 2/3 innings. Yuniesky Betancourt and Richie Sexson both clubbed solo home runs for the Mariners, who have dropped 10 of their last 14 games. Jamie Burke had a pair of hits and scored once, while Adrian Beltre drove in one. Detroit won six of 10 from the Mariners last season and is 24-15 in the series since the start of the 2004 campaign.
