Kennedy, Yankees Hope To Get On Roll In Finale With O's
(Sports Network) - Ian Kennedy tries once again for his first win of the season this evening, when the New York Yankees play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.Kennedy, one of the young arms being counted on by the Yankees this season, has struggled mightily in his seven starts, going 0-3 while pitching to an 8.48 earned run average. After a brief stint in the minors, Kennedy returned to the Yanks on Thursday, but was tagged with the loss against the Tampa Bay Rays after surrendering five runs and five hits in five innings of that one, The 23-year-old righty was hammered for four runs and five hits in just 2 2/3 innings in losing to the Orioles earlier this year. Baltimore will counter with left-hander Brian Burres, who is 4-4 with a 3.47 ERA. Burres earned the win against the Washington Nationals on Saturday, as he allowed two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. Burres beat the Yanks earlier in the year and is 2-2 lifetime against them with a 3.67 ERA in eight games, four of which have been starts. In the second game of this set on Wednesday, Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two doubles, one of which should have been ruled a homer, as New York rolled to an 8-0 win. Rodriguez, in his second game back from the disabled list, finished with two runs scored and two driven in, while Johnny Damon went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Yankees, who snapped a four-game losing streak and won for just the second time in their last eight contests. Darrell Rasner (3-0) won his third straight start, going seven strong innings and not yielding a run on five hits while fanning six and walking just one. It was a career-high in strikeouts and innings for Rasner. Joba Chamberlain took care of the last two frames, doling out two walks and a hit to go with his three strikeouts. After the game, New York manager Joe Girardi stated that the Yankees have begun the process to ease Chamberlain into the starting rotation. Nick Markakis and Kevin Millar each had two hits for the Orioles, who have lost just twice in their last seven attempts. Freddie Bynum had a double in the loss. To make matters worse for the O's, third baseman Melvin Mora left in the bottom of the third inning with a contusion and laceration on his right middle finger. He is questionable for tonight's tilt. Garrett Olson (3-1) took the loss after he was roughed up for a season-high six runs and eight hits in a season-low 2 2/3 innings. For the second time in a week, though, umpires blew a home run call at Yankee Stadium. In the sixth inning, Rodriguez hit a ball that caromed off a set of yellow stairs beyond right-center field. However, umpires ruled the ball in play for an RBI double, to the disbelief of Rodriguez. On Sunday night, there was another botched home run call when the Mets' Carlos Delgado hit a ball that bounced off the bottom of the pole in left field but was ruled foul. Baltimore has won three of five from the Yankees this season.
