Padres' Tomko To DL, Among Other Moves For San Diego

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

(Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres placed pitcher Brett Tomko on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right elbow. The move is retroactive to July 1.

The journeyman right-hander has made two relief appearances for the Padres since being signed by the club after his release from the Kansas City Royals on June 21.

Tomko signed a one-year, $3 million contract in the off-season with Kansas City, but struggled to a 2-7 mark with a 6.97 earned run average.

This is Tomko's third stint with the Padres, having pitched for the club in 2002 and again in 2007. The 12-year veteran holds a 95-99 record with a 4.70 ERA with Cincinnati, Seattle, San Diego, St. Louis, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Kansas City.

In more moves Tuesday, San Diego outrighted outfielder Paul McAnulty and pitcher Carlos Guevara.

McAnulty, 27, hit just .207 with three homers and 13 RBI in 66 games this season, while Guevara, in his first season in the big leagues, posted a 1-0 record and 5.84 ERA in 10 games with the club.

Filling in those spots will be outfielder Chip Ambres, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Portland, infielder Brian Myrow and pitcher Joe Thatcher, who were both recalled from the minor league affiliate.

Thatcher was tagged with an 0-4 record and a 7.40 ERA in 18 games for the Padres earlier this season, but tossed a scoreless inning of relief in San Diego's 10-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.

Myrow also had a great comeback with the club, recording a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh inning. He was 1-for-10 at the plate in 12 games with the Padres last season.
