Anaheim Angels (63-67) At Detroit Tigers (31-97), 1:05 P.m.
The Detroit Tigers attempt to halt an 11-game skid
and avoid a four-game sweep this afternoon against the Anaheim Angels. The Angels have currently won three straight contests. Scot Shields has been
strong all season for the club, as his 2.28 ERA is much more indicative of the
way he has pitched than his 3-4 record. Tuesday's outing against the White Sox
was not one of his stronger efforts, however, as Shields gave up 10 hits in
defeat. The Angels' righty has pitched only one inning in his career against the
Tigers. Mike Maroth will get the ball for Detroit today as he continues his effort to
avoid losing 20 games this season. Maroth is currently 6-18 with a 5.25 ERA,
and he is coming off a loss to the Rangers on Tuesday. The Tigers lefty has yet to face the Angels this season, and his only career
appearance against Anaheim resulted in defeat. Shields is 0-3 on the road this season with a 3.11 ERA, and Maroth is 1-10 at
home with a 4.79 ERA. Yesterday, Garret Anderson's two-run single in the 10th inning snapped a tie
and lifted Anaheim to a 14-8 win over Detroit. Scott Spiezio's three-run double capped a six-run rally in the 10th for the
Angels, who came back from a 5-0 deficit to post their third straight
victory. Eric Owens tied a career-high with five hits and Adam Riggs posted a
career-high three hits. Brendan Donnelly (2-2) earned the win despite permitting two runs on three
hits in two innings for Anaheim, which posted its 14th straight win over the
Tigers. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth. Craig Monroe registered his first career multi-homer game and drove in a
career-high six runs for the Tigers, who extended their season-long losing
streak to 11 games. Carlos Pena homered. The Angels posted six runs in the 10th to secure the victory. Bengie Molina
delivered a leadoff single against Chris Spurling (1-2), and Chone Figgins
walked with one out. A hit by Owens loaded the bases. Anaheim notched 17 hits for the second time in three games and is now within
striking distance of evening its overall record. Detroit fell to 1-11 in extra innings this season and has won 20 fewer games
than any other team in the Majors. Anaheim is 26-38 on the road this season, while the Tigers are just 14-48 at
home.
