Pirates Rally Late To Top Giants, Complete Sweep

POSTED: 5:18 pm EDT May 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Freddy Sanchez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored as the Pittsburgh Pirates completed the three-game sweep with a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park.

Jason Bay went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Ryan Doumit drove in a pair of runs for the Pirates, who have won three straight and four of six.

Paul Maholm started on the mound and gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of work. Franquelis Osoria (2-1) got the win for pitching one inning of scoreless relief.

Steve Holm drove in a pair of runs while Dan Ortmeier added a pair of hits and a run scored for the Giants, who have dropped four straight and five of six. Matt Cain (1-3) was saddled with the loss as he gave up five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Cain also went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate.

Trailing by two runs to start the seventh, Pittsburgh grabbed the lead for good in the frame. With runners on second and third and no outs, Nate McLouth lofted a fly ball to center that allowed Nyjer Morgan to score on the sacrifice. Bay then doubled to left to score Sanchez.

Jack Taschner took the hill for Cain and got Doumit to ground out before issuing an intentional walk to Xavier Nady. After a wild pitch, Adam LaRoche punched a single to right to score Bay for a 5-4 advantage.

San Francisco put runners on first and second with one out in the eighth, but John Grabow got Ortmeier to fly out and Tyler Yates retired Bengie Molina on a ground out to end the frame.

Matt Capps retired the Giants in the ninth to pick up his eighth save of the season.

The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Doumit belted a single to left that scored Maholm and Sanchez.

The Giants, though, answered with four runs in the fourth. Aaron Rowand worked a one-out walk and, two baters later Ortmeier punched a single to center to put runners at the corners. Emmanuel Burriss then beat out an infield single to score Rowand and Holm followed with a double to deep center that chased home both runners. Cain then roped a single to center that allowed Holm to score for a 4-2 lead.
