Pirates Recall Van Benschoten For Start

POSTED: 12:31 am EDT July 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled pitcher John Van Benschoten from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Van Benschoten started Monday's tilt with the Houston Astros opposite Runelvys Hernandez.

Van Benschoten pitched adequately, allowing three runs - two earned - on six hits and four walks with four strikeouts over five frames to take the no- decision in Pittsburgh's 9-3 comeback win.

This is Van Benschoten's third stint with the big-league club this season, with a mark of 1-2 and a 8.27 earned run average in eight games, including four starts.

The 28-year-old right-hander was the eighth overall pick, by the Pirates, in the 2001 draft.

In a corresponding roster move, pitcher Marino Salas was optioned back to Indianapolis. Salas has a 1-0 record with a 9.26 ERA in 10 games for Pittsburgh this season.
