National League Game Summary - Colorado At San Francisco

Thursday, August 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - Bengie Molina and Pablo Sandoval hit back-to-back homers to give San Francisco the lead, and the Giants pulled away for a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set.

Tim Lincecum (15-3) took the win after allowing just one run on five hits and three walks in 7 2/3 frames. He also struck out 10 in winning his third consecutive start and fourth decision in a row.

"My goodness, Lincecum was lights-out," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "We were able to scratch out one run against him and nothing else. He's a throwback, for Giants fans, to Juan Marichal, coming over the top and with thump on his fastball. He has a filthy change and he was on."

Dave Roberts and Omar Vizquel each had two hits for the Giants, who had lost the first two games of the series.

Livan Hernandez (11-11) took the loss despite giving up only two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings for Colorado. Luis Vizcaino allowed two runs -- one earned -- in two-thirds of an inning.

Chris Iannetta finished 3-for-4, while Troy Tulowitzki drove in the sole run for the Rockies, whose four-game win streak was ended.

Iannetta doubled with one out in the second inning and scored when Tulowitzki followed with a single. But that one-run lead evaporated in the seventh inning.

Hernandez got leadoff hitter Randy Winn to fly out, but then gave up the game- tying homer to Molina, who blasted the ball to the stands in left-center field. Sandoval, batting left-handed, then sent a long fly to left that sneaked into the corner of the stands in fair territory for a 2-1 Giants lead.

That prompted Hernandez's exit in favor of Vizcaino, who got out of the inning without further damage.

Lincecum walked Willy Taveras with one out in the eighth, and after he got Matt Holliday to fly out, the San Francisco starter was taken out for Jack Taschner. But Taschner gave up a single to Brad Hawpe that put runners on the corners, and was removed for Brian Wilson, who got Garrett Atkins to foul out.

In the home eighth, the Giants tacked on two more runs. Vizquel led off with a single, and Eugenio Velez reached base on a fielder's choice that saw neither runner forced out.

Roberts then bunted to third, and the throw sailed past first base as Vizquel scored. Glendon Rusch came on in relief and struck out Fred Lewis for the first out.

With runners on the corners, Winn grounded into a double play, but Velez had crossed home before the relay throw was completed, giving San Francisco another run. Wilson stayed in for the ninth and worked around an Iannetta single to end the game and record his 36th save.

Game Notes:

Lincecum has struck out 10 or more batters seven times this season, third-best in franchise history...The Giants have hit back-to-back homers twice this season...The Rockies left seven runners on base, while the Giants stranded only two.
