Helton Has Back Surgery

Thursday, October 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton underwent surgery on his lower back, the club announced Thursday.

The procedure took place Tuesday at Marina Del Rey Hospital in Los Angeles, performed by Dr. Robert Watkins.

Helton is now recovering at his home in the Denver area, and is expected to make a full recovery for spring training.

The 35-year-old power-hitting infielder hit just .264 with seven home runs and 29 RBI in 83 games for the Rockies in 2008. He missed more than two months of the season from early July to mid-September due to a strained lower back.

A five-time All-Star, Helton has compiled a .328 average with 310 homers and 1,116 RBI over 1,661 games -- all with Colorado.
