Millar, Orioles Blast Rangers

Baltimore, MD -- (Sports Network) - Jeremy Guthrie fired seven innings of one-run ball and Kevin Millar hit two home runs, as the Baltimore Orioles dominated the Texas Rangers in a 9-1 victory, the first of three games between the two clubs.Guthrie (9-8) allowed a solo home run among five hits, while walking one with four strikeouts, to win his sixth decision in the last seven. Millar knocked in three runs while Ramon Hernandez, Juan Castro and Brian Roberts had two RBI each as Baltimore emerged victorious for the second time in its last three contests. Travis Metcalf was 2-for-3 with a home run and Marlon Byrd had two hits for Texas, which has dropped its last three games. Starter Luis Mendoza (3-5) was roughed up for five runs on six hits and a walk, in just three innings of work, to take the loss. Baltimore loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a hit batsman in the second inning. Castro came through with a sacrifice fly and Roberts poked a two-run double to right to give the O's a 3-0 lead. Aubrey Huff singled to right leading off the third and Millar followed with a home run over the left field fence to extend Baltimore's lead. Metcalf put Texas on the board with a solo shot to left in the fifth, but the O's offense was unrelenting. Dustin Nippert, who came on to pitch for the Rangers in the fourth, was touched for two runs in the fifth. Millar led off the frame with his second homer of the game before Nippert sandwiched a pair of walks around a strikeout. Castro then looped an RBI single to center as Baltimore took a commanding 7-1 lead. Hernandez had a pair of RBI singles down the stretch for Baltimore. In the sixth he knocked in Luke Scott, who had tripled. In the eighth he plated Huff, who doubled off Warner Madrigal. The Rangers managed just six hits in the game and left six men on base. Game Notes Texas leads the season series 4-3 and took two of three from the O's in Baltimore from July 4-6. Texas also won two of three encounters with Baltimore on the road last season, including a memorable 30-3 shellacking on August 22, 2007...The Orioles returned home Friday after going 5-4 on a nine-game, three- city road trip...Saturday's scheduled starters are Vicente Padilla (12-5) for Texas and Daniel Cabrera (7-7) for Baltimore...Baltimore recalled pitcher Rocky Cherry from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. The move fills the roster spot opened when the Orioles traded reliever Chad Bradford to Tampa Bay on Thursday for a player to be named later...Six Oriole batters had multi-hit games including Melvin Mora, Huff, Scott and Jay Payton.
