Floyd And Cabrera Too Much For Orioles

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - Orlando Cabrera went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a triple, two RBI and three runs scored as the Chicago White Sox downed the Baltimore Orioles, 8-3, in the second of three games from Camden Yards.

Carlos Quentin went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, one RBI and one run scored, while Nick Swisher hit a two-run home run for the White Sox, who have won three straight.

Gavin Floyd (14-6) got the win as he gave up just two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts in eight innings of work for Chicago, which moved two games ahead of Minnesota for first place in the AL Central. Minnesota lost to Seattle, 3-2, on Tuesday.

Luke Scott drove in a pair of runs while Brian Burres (7-8), who was recalled from Norfolk before the game, gave up six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in five innings of work for the Orioles, who have dropped five straight and seven of eight.

"You need better pitching is what you need," said Baltimore manager Dave Trembley about the recent losing streak. "It starts with starting pitching. That's the name of the game: starting pitching."

Chicago grabbed a quick lead in the first as Cabrera led off with a double and Swisher smacked a pitch over the left-center wall for a 2-0 lead.

Cabrera's sacrifice fly in the second plated Joe Crede for a 3-0 Chicago advantage.

The White Sox continued to tack on runs in the third as Alexei Ramirez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Chicago padded its lead further. Toby Hall led off with a single and crossed the plate when Cabrera followed with a triple. After Swisher struck out, Quentin knocked a double to left for a 6-0 lead.

Baltimore had been retired in order through the first three innings, but got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Brian Roberts led off with a single, moved to second on Lou Montanez's sacrifice bunt and then scored on a double from Nick Markakis.

In the sixth, Cabrera led off with a double and later scored on a double from Jermaine Dye for a 7-1 lead.

The Orioles made it a 7-2 game in the seventh on an RBI single from Scott, but Chicago got the run back in the eighth thanks to a run-scoring single from Ken Griffey Jr.

Scott's RBI single in the ninth off of Adam Russell accounted for the final score.
