Red-Hot Angels To Send Out Santana In Opener With Tribe
(Sports Network) - All-Star Ervin Santana tries for his 12th win of the season this evening, when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim open a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians at Angel Stadium. However, getting that win may be easier said than done, as the 25-year-old right-hander is 0-5 in six lifetime starts against the Indians. Santana won his final three decisions before the break and defeated the Oakland Athletics on July 12 to run his record to 11-3 on the season. Santana scattered five hits over seven scoreless innings in that one, as he lowered his earned run average to 3.34. The Angels won for the fifth straight time on Sunday. Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter hit back-to-back home runs and Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 40th save of the year, lifting Los Angeles past the Boston Red Sox, 5-3, to sweep the defending World Champions. Casey Kotchman hit a two-run go-ahead double in the eighth for the Angels, who have won six of seven overall. Howie Kendrick doubled, knocked in a run and scored once for Los Angeles. Jon Garland lasted 6 2/3 frames for the Angels and was touched for three runs -- two earned -- on six hits. Darren Oliver (3-1) picked up the win as he tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball. Rodriguez worked a perfect ninth to become the fastest in major league history to 40 saves, doing so in 98 games. Cleveland, meanwhile, has been on a roll of late as well and took two of three over the weekend from the Seattle Mariners. Cliff Lee threw his second complete game of the season in Sunday's rubber match, helping the Indians to a 6-2 win. Lee (13-2) gave up 11 hits and two runs, but didn't walk any and struck out four for the Indians, who have won six of seven. Kelly Shoppach hit a three- run home run and drove in four in the win. Getting the call for the Tribe tonight will be veteran righty Paul Byrd, who is 3-10 with a 5.47 ERA. Byrd has just one win in his last 10 starts and hasn't pitched since receiving a no-decision against the Detroit Tigers back on July 9. Byrd lost to the Angels the last time he faced them and is 3-2 in his career against them with a 5.29 ERA in eight starts. The Angels took two of three from the Indians in Anaheim earlier in the season.
