White Sox Hit The Road To Kansas City

(Sports Network) - After a very successful homestand, the Chicago White Sox take their act to the road this evening with a visit to Kansas City to battle the Royals in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.

Chicago posted a 4-3 victory over Oakland on Sunday to wrap up a 10-game residency with an 8-2 mark, giving them an outstanding 32-13 record at home this year. The White Sox will now try to improve on their 19-24 record on the road this year.

Dewayne Wise was 2-for-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in Sunday's win. John Danks (6-4) allowed just four hits and two walks to go with a career-high nine strikeouts in a two-run, 6 1/3-inning performance.

Joe Crede scored and recorded an RBI on the day he was named to his first All- Star team. Carlos Quentin also joins Crede on the American League All-Star roster, as the White Sox lead the Minnesota Twins by 1 1/2 games for first place in the AL Central.

Chicago, though, may be without closer Bobby Jenks for this set, and possibly longer, as the right-hander is battling a sore left shoulder and back ailment. He hasn't pitched since June 29 and has 18 saves and a 1.95 earned run average in 32 games this year.

However, the White Sox could have Paul Konerko back on the roster today. The first baseman is currently on the disabled list due to a strained left oblique. He hasn't played since June 14 and his hitting just .215 this year with eight homers and 30 RBI.

Chicago swept a three-game series with the Royals at home from June 3-5, giving the club a victory in five straight matchups with Kansas City. The White Sox won six of nine in Kansas City a year ago.

Jose Contreras starts for the White Sox tonight and is 9-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 16 career starts against Kansas City. That includes a 5-2 mark, a shutout performance and 3.01 ERA in eight career starts at Kauffman Stadium. The right-hander posted a home win over the Royals on June 5.

That victory was his last before a three-start skid that Contreras halted with a win over the Cubs on June 27. The 36-year-old then got a no-decision versus the Indians on Wednesday, giving up four runs (3 earned) on six hits and four walks over six innings. On the season, Contreras is 7-6 with a 4.02 ERA.

The Royals, meanwhile, avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays with Monday's 7-4, 10-inning victory. John Buck hit a three-game homer in the 10th, while Mike Aviles followed with a solo homer.

Kansas City's lone All-Star representative, Joakim Soria (1-1) allowed a homer to Eric Hinske in the Rays' turn at the plate, but recovered to strike out Ben Zobrist and induce Akinori Iwamura into a game-ending groundout.

David DeJesus collected three hits and drove in two runs for the Royals, who won for the second time in their last seven games. Aviles finished with three hits, while Gload added an RBI and scored twice.

Kyle Davies toes the rubber for the Royals and was roughed up in Baltimore the last time out. The right-hander gave up seven runs -- including five in the fourth inning -- on eight hits in four-plus innings of work on Thursday. However, he got a no-decision after his club took him off the hook with a 10-7 victory.

Davies is 3-1 with a 4.71 ERA in seven starts this year and has faced the White Sox just once before. That came on September 17 of last season and he got the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings.
