Detroit, MI -- (Sports Network) - Edgar Renteria finished 4-for-4 and drove in a career-high tying five runs, as the Detroit Tigers downed the Seattle Mariners, 12-8, in the opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Justin Verlander (2-7) gave up one run on four hits and struck out seven in six innings to pick up the win and snap a career-high four-game losing skid.

Renteria hit a solo home run and added a three-run triple for Detroit, which won for just the second time in its last eight games. Curtis Granderson clubbed a two-run homer and doubled in another run, while Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez also drilled solo home runs. Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

"We pitched good, we hit good," Renteria said. "We got hits with runners in scoring position."

Carlos Silva (3-3) was victimized for seven runs on nine hits in only four innings for the Mariners. After beginning the season with three wins in his first four starts, Silva has gone 0-3 with three no-decisions in his last six outings.

Ichiro Suzuki was 3-for-4 and Adrian Beltre knocked in three runs for Seattle, which had won three of four coming in. Yuniesky Betancourt and Jose Vidro both collected two hits and an RBI.

"The story of this game was that we didn't pitch well," Seattle manager John McLaren said. "I have to give the guys credit, they hung in there. But you have to get your offense going early. You can't fall so far behind and expect to win."

Beltre staked the Mariners to a 1-0 lead in the first, hammering a 3-1 fastball over the bullpen and into the first row of seats in left field. It could have been a two-run shot, but Ichiro, who led the game off with a single, was thrown out attempting to swipe second earlier in the at-bat.

Detroit scratched out two runs in the second. Cabrera led off with a double and Guillen smacked a grounder that deflected off the glove of second baseman Jose Lopez, which slowed the ball down just enough to allow Cabrera to scamper home. A ground out by Matthew Joyce advanced the runner to second and Renteria put the Tigers on top with a single back through the middle.

The Tigers put a five-spot on the board in the fourth inning. Ordonez and Cabrera singled to begin the frame and, after Guillen's ground out moved the runners into scoring position, Silva issued a walk to Joyce. Renteria then cleared the bases with a triple past Ichiro, who was playing shallow and unable to cut off the scorching line drive.

Silva stopped the bleeding momentarily, retiring Ivan Rodriguez on a ground out, but Granderson stroked an RBI double to left and scored on a single by Placido Polanco.

Ordonez's seventh home run of the season made it an 8-1 game in the fifth, and the Tigers tacked on three more runs in the sixth on home runs by Renteria and Granderson.

In the seventh, Richie Sexson ripped a one-out double, took third when Kenji Johjima grounded out and, after Wladimir Balentien drew a walk, scored on a single by Betancourt. Ichiro then singled to left and Joyce's fielding error allowed Balentien to cross the plate.

Detroit added a run on Guillen's solo shot in the home half.

Miguel Cairo hit a sac fly in the next frame to make it a 12-4 game and the Mariners made it interesting with a four-run ninth. Beltre had a two-run single, while Jeremy Reed and Vidro each drove in a run.

Todd Jones notched his seventh save of the season after he got Cairo to ground into a game-ending double play.

Gary Sheffield has gone hitless in his last 15 at-bats...Detroit won six of 10 from the Mariners last season and is 22-15 in the series since the start of the 2004 campaign...Seattle's Jarrod Washburn (2-5) and Detroit's Kenny Rogers (3-4) are scheduled to start on Wednesday.
