Tigers, D'Backs Play Rubber Match At Chase Field
(Sports Network) - The top team in baseball shoots for its 19th home win of the season this afternoon as the Arizona Diamondbacks collide with the Detroit Tigers in the finale of a three-game interleague set at Chase Field. On Saturday the Diamondbacks were slowed by a 3-2 loss to Detroit, yet the home team is still 4 1/2 games ahead of second-place Los Angeles in the National League West. The win for the Tigers, which was brought on by a two-run single by Carlos Guillen and a solo home run by Matthew Joyce, snapped a five-game slide for the group but still leaves the Tigers last in the AL Central and with a 9-14 road record thus far. Armando Galarraga allowed just one hit and two runs in six-plus innings on the mound. He did walk five D'Backs, but managed to strike out three and in turn lower his ERA to 2.80 on the season. Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds each scored a run for Arizona in the setback, while starter Max Scherzer was saddled with the loss after giving up two runs on three hits and four walks, over five innings of work. Nate Robertson takes his place on the mound for the Tigers in today's series finale. The left-hander, currently 16 games below .500 (43-59) in his career, has won just one of five decisions in 2008. Robertson, who is in his seventh major league season out of Wichita State, has watched his team fall in four of his last five outings and six of his eight appearances overall thus far. On Tuesday Robertson was tagged for 10 hits for the second straight game, yet yielded only two runs over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Kansas City on the road. As for the Diamondbacks, the schedule shows future Hall-of-Famer Randy Johnson poised to take the hill. Now 13 wins shy of 300 for his illustrious career, the Big Unit nearly took himself out of the rotation for the weekend after trying to field a ball barehanded in his last outing on Tuesday versus Colorado. Despite the awkward defensive effort by the California native, Johnson managed to post his third win in four decisions as the Diamondbacks logged the 8-4 home win over the Rockies. Johnson permitted nine hits and four runs over five innings, but he also struck out four without issuing a single walk. For his career, one that has spanned 21 years since he broke in with Montreal in 1988, Johnson is 10-7 with a 4.04 ERA versus Detroit. Arizona's pitchers have been the reason for the team's early success, showing a 3.63 ERA to rank second in the NL behind only Atlanta entering action on Sunday. The staff is first in the league with an opponent batting average of .237, first in walks issued (134) and third in strikeouts (313). For as good as Arizona has been on the mound so far this season, the Tigers have been the exact opposite, suffering with a 4.94 ERA. The club is still the only one in the AL without a complete game and is one of two (Seattle) without a single shutout. The Diamondbacks are 12-8 all-time against the Tigers, including a 7-4 mark now at Chase Field.
