PITTSBURGH -- In about two weeks, you may be able to "cut the cord" on your phone service.
The Federal Communications Commission said that's when customers can make their home phone numbers the same as their wireless numbers. The days of having two phones, a hard-wire in your house and a wireless, may be ending.
The FCC said your home phone number can become your wireless number.Carnegie Mellon University professor Marvin Sirbu follows the industry.
He said, initially, people will be reluctant to make the switch."But I expect continued growth in the people who have no wire-lined phone and it's going to be business where people are always on the move like a plumber, a real estate agent," Sirbu said.Locally, Verizon isn't expecting a huge drop in customers for a number of reasons:

Many businesses still need hard-wire capabilities.
Many homes need their land lines for Internet access.
911 service still can't pinpoint your location in an emergency from a wireless phone.
And there is the issue of reliability -- cellular service can be spotty in some areas. Verizon said it won't challenge the move.
But, some phone companies like Qwest plan to fight the move for fear they could lose thousands of customers.
