PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy has until Saturday to either sign or veto a revised city budget.
Murphy's $407 million plan called for new property and wage taxes.Last week, the City Council shot down that plan.Instead, it voted in favor of a $387 million budget that calls for a 5 percent parking tax increase, keeping city pools and recreation centers closed, laying off nine workers, and keeping 100 vacant jobs unfilled.Monday night, the two newest council members said they plan to make it work.Councilman Luke Ravenstahl said, "I think that the budget set forth by the council members was the only real alternative at that point."Councilman Doug Shields said, "The budget's alive for another five weeks. There is always room for compromise and there is always room to fine tune."Both Shields and Ravenstahl were sworn in Monday.
