Decision Day Arrives For Mayor Murphy

City Council Passed Budget $20 Million Less Than Murphy's

Posted: 10:00 am EST January 12, 2004

Mayor Tom Murphy must decide Monday what he will do about the City Council's 2004 budget proposal.

Murphy presented a $407 million budget to council. Two weeks ago, the Council passed a budget that is $20 million less.

Now, Murphy has until 5:30 p.m. to sign council's bill, veto the entire bill or use a line item veto.

Sunday night, City Councilman Jim Motznik told Channel 11 News council members Gene Ricciardi and Alan Hertzberg are working with the mayor's office to reach a compromise.

"There's a movement now in council, led by Gene Riccardi, to try to come to a happy medium, where we can raise the parking tax more than it's already been made to make sure employees don't get laid off and get revenue from Act 47," Motznik said.

A Murphy spokesperson said, "The mayor is continuing to review the council's final budget to determine what impact it will have on our ability to provide services to our community."
