PITTSBURGH -- Police said a teenager took a semi-automatic handgun onto school property at Oliver High School Monday.

One of the school's guards became suspicious after spotting two unknown teenagers inside the school just after 9 a.m., so he called for backup, police said.

The guard, Officer Billy Ehrin, then escorted the two teens outside and at that point one of them took off running, officials said. Ehrin chased him and tackled him about 100 yards down the road.

Investigators said the suspect who took off is 17-years-old and attends a charter school. Police said outside the school, they recovered a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun that had been tossed in the bushes.

"One police officer was injured in the chase and he is in the hospital right now getting checked out. But we got the gun. The gun was loaded with one in the chamber. Everybody is safe," said Chief Bob Fadzen of the Pittsburgh School Police.

Police said the other suspect is 16-years-old and isn't in school. Investigators are now reviewing surveillance video to determine how the two got into the school.

"We think another student let them, in a side door. If we can confirm that, we will charge that student as well," Fadzen said.

While the school has metal detectors at the front door, parents and students expressed concern about the security breach.

“Maybe the need to put security at all the entrances because if they don't have them then somebody's is going to get hurt,” said local mother Marnettea Reed.

“I don't know. It's going to keep on going on until something else happens,” said student Charnettea Reed.

Police said they don't know what the teens wanted.

They were taken to the Shuman Detention Center and charged with weapons violations and assaulting a police officer.

The officer was treated for injuries to his back and leg and has since been released from the hospital.
