Injury On Rugby Field Leads To McCandless Teen's Death

Victim Suffered Concussion 1 Week Ago

A teenage rugby player died more than a week after he was hit in a game.

The victim's family told Channel 11 that Eric Pelly, 18, was playing for the Pittsburgh Harlequins on Sept. 30 and suffered a concussion in the game when he was kneed in the temple.

He was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital, where he spent three days recovering.

When Pelly was released, he was told not to participate in contact sports for three to four months but after that he could return to normal activity.

On Tuesday, Pelly was sitting down for dinner at home, when he collapsed and fell off of his chair, according to the family.

He was taken to Passavant where he was pronounced dead.

Pelly also suffered a concussion two years ago playing football for North Allegheny High School and gave up football after that.

The official cause of death is pending.
