PITTSBURGH -- Neighbors and business owners in the South Side are tired of the same old problems: trash, fights and people using the streets as toilets.City council is considering limiting the number of bars in the neighborhood.Right now there are 89 active liquor licenses.City council is planning on taking up the so-called bar-limit measure. It would stop bars or other establishments that serve liquor from opening near two or more existing bars or lounges. The bill is set to go up for a vote next Wednesday.A Target 11 investigation showed why this is such a big problem. After hours on East Carson Street in the South Side, Target 11 saw people leaving clubs, getting into fights and throwing up in the streets.Target 11 showed the video to Councilman Jeff Koch, who represents the South Side.Koch said he get complaints about the South Side on a regular basis.Chuck Nogal owns a hobby shop on East Carson Street. He said he's even had windows broken out. “We're going to get all these people that have no respect for me or any of our property,” said Nogal.Nick Kefal has lived in the South Side for the past five years.Recently several bars that hold hundreds of people have opened. “Somebody could nudge somebody and push them into the street or start fistfights and then you have a situation that could get out of control,” said Kefal.Koch has introduced legislation that would restrict the number of bars on the South Side.Koch's ordinance would ban new bars from opening within 150 feet of two existing bars.In addition to all of the commotion Target 11 witnessed, residents also expressed concern about finding a parking space and about all of the trash that's left behind after a weekend of partying.Residents said they realize that Koch's legislation won't eliminate this but they hope it will curb some of the problems.
