Greene Co. Teen Dies From Meningitis

GREENE COUNTY, Pa. -- Channel 11 News has learned that a Greene County teenager died from bacterial meningococcal meningitis.Richard McGarvey, from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, said Damian Herr didn’t attend school in the county, so an investigation with classmates there was not necessary.The 15-year-old was a gymnast and attended a gymnastics facility in Monongalia County, W.Va.The Monongalia County Health Department was in contact with the facility and those who were considered to have been close contacts of Herr were referred for treatment.Shelley C. Martin, Public Health Educator for the Monongalia County Health Department, said, "Other persons attending this facility may not be at risk unless they had prolonged direct contact with the sick child. Additionally, this disease does not live on surfaces and there is no risk of getting this disease from the facility such as mats, bars or other equipment. In addition, the health department provided educational material to the owner of the training facility."Meningococcal disease is a serious illness, caused by bacteria. People with meningococcal meningitis may have fever, headache, nausea vomiting, a stiff neck and rash. Anyone can get meningococcal disease.Meningococcal meningitis is spread from person to person by sharing saliva through:
sharing eating utensils
drinking after others
kissing on the mouth
sharing a cigarette
mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
