A dog was left in the bitter cold, but it wasn't frigid temperatures that killed the animal, according to officials.

The pit bull, Poppy, was found dead by the door of Chauntel Hardy's home at 13th and McDonough streets in North Braddock.

Animal Control agents said the dog starved to death.

Dr. Georgia Nakovich, the veterinarian who examined the dog after it died, said the dog was about 30 pounds underweight and had no food in its digestive tract.

She estimated the dog was not fed in the last 10 days.

Officials said the dog ate a large amount of shredded garbage bags and aluminum foil, which clogged the dog's intestines and caused hemorrhaging.

Poppy was not even supposed to be in Hardy's care, agents said.

The dog was adopted by someone else from the Animal Rescue League and given to her.

Hardy has been charged with failure to provide care, shelter and veterinary services to the dog. She faces a $750 fine and up to 90 days in jail.
