An outbreak of canine influenza, dog flu, was confirmed recently at the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania.

Dog flu is a new, contagious and potentially deadly virus that causes respiratory infection.

The League is temporarily suspending the surrender of dogs from the public and the treatment of dogs in their walk-in veterinary clinic until the outbreak is contained.

To prevent your dog from catching the disease, keep it away from other coughing dogs.

Also, pet owners should be careful in choosing pet shops or boarding kennels.
