PITTSBURGH -- Dogs are used to sniff out bombs, explosives and drugs, so why not mold?

That is exactly what one local dog is trained to do.

Two-year-old Kody works for Susan Weiss, owner of K-9 Mold Service in Pittsburgh.

Weiss brings Kody into a home and lets the dog sniff around. “When she finds the mold she sits. She lets us know by sitting. Then we ask her to show me and say to point out where she says the source of mold is.”

Kody’s then rewarded for her find.

Weiss said, “Kody's biggest advantage is she's finding the mold you don't see. She’s finding the hidden mold.”

Once mold is discovered, Weiss takes an air sample to determine what kind it is.

Weiss said, “If she only alerts on one wall in your room then that's the area you only have to worry about remediation, you don't have to tear out the whole room.”

That can save a homeowner some big bucks.

Mold grows where there is a lot of moisture.

To prevent mold, keep humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent, ventilate showers and laundry areas and fix leaks quickly.
