Somerset County Hunter Falls From Tree Stand

Hunting Season Ends Dec. 8

Pennsylvania's two-week rifle deer season got under way on Monday, but not without incident. A Somerset County hunter died after falling from a tree stand.

Roger Deem, 56, fell about 20 feet from a stand in Brothers Valley Township. Police have ruled his death accidental.

Meanwhile, a change in state law means it is now legal to hunt 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset. The game commission expects more than 1 million hunters to head out Monday, despite the rain.

This year, to make it easier for hunters, additional state forest roads will be opened. That means more than 90 percent of all state forest land will be within one-half mile of an open road.

The Allegheny County Health Department is offering some advice to hunters:
  • Drive carefully to avoid hitting deer to and from your hunting site.

  • If you have a heart condition, avoid strenuous activity.

  • Make yourself visible to other hunters.

  • Carry high-energy foods, and a survival kit with water.

  • Hunting season ends on Dec. 8.
