Bar Owner Has Message For Onorato

Castle Shannon Tavern Protests Drink Tax

Bar owners are taking their frustration to the street to protest Allegheny County's newly passed drink tax.

A sign outside the Castle Tavern in Castle Shannon targets County Chief Executive Dan Onorato.

It reads, "We voted. Dan Onorato not welcome."

The bar owners are part of a class action lawsuit to overturn the 10 percent tax on poured alcoholic beverages.

Jan Toci said she e-mailed Onorato about her opposition to the tax but he ignored her.

"Nobody here is happy with him," she said. "I always liked Dan Onorato until this happened. I voted for him. I won't vote for him when he runs for governor."

The tax takes effect on Jan. 1.

The $30 million it is expected to generate would help fund the cash-strapped Port Authority.
