PITTSBURGH -- Get ready for another round in Allegheny County’s drink tax debate.Tuesday night, County Council's Republican caucus pushed for a repeal of the drink and car rental taxes.Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato seemed to refer to the issue Tuesday in his State of the County Address. While he didn't use the phrase "drink tax," he did talk about where the tax money is going."I will fight any attempt to return to the bad policy of giving property tax dollars to Port Authority," said Onorato. The money raised by the new taxes is meant to fund the Allegheny County Port Authority. But one councilman said the county is in line to receive more than $22 million in gaming revenue and he thinks it should fund mass transit. On Monday, Onorato said, "If the Republicans have their way, that means they want me to give $28 million of your property taxes to the Port Authority for the local match. That is not wishful thinking; that's exactly what they're saying.""Why would he threaten something like that that could hurt the people of Allegheny County? What’s he here for? Is he here for himself or is he here for the people of Allegheny County?" Allegheny County Councilman Matt Drozd said.Watch Channel 11 News for the outcome of the council meeting.
