How To Avoid IRS Stimulus Rebate Check Scams

Rebate Checks In Mail In May

Wednesday, March 5, 2008 – updated: 5:18 pm EST March 5, 2008

The IRS stimulus rebate checks will be in the mail in May.

Already there are people trying to prey on the innocent by saying they're from the IRS. Channel 11 wants to let you know about a couple scams going on where people either e-mail you or call you claiming to be from the IRS asking for personal information. If you refuse, they threaten to audit you or say you won’t get your stimulus check.

Remember, even if it looks official, the IRS never e-mails you. It also never asks for a credit card number, PIN or password. As for a phone call, IRS spokesman David Stewart said, “say thank you very much I’ll give you a call back. Then call the local IRS and ask, ‘I got this call. Are you really trying to touch base with me to see if there's an issue with a past return?’ and they'll be able to say yes or no on the phone.”

To get that rebate check, all you have to do is file a tax return. The government takes care of the rest.

You'll also soon be able to go to irs.gov and click on "where's my rebate" to see where you are in terms of receiving your check.
