DAYTON, Pa. -- Fire can be seen in the sky in Dayton, Pa.

Why is the town aglow? Workers are helping de-pressurize a leaking gas well underground in the area.

Initially, nervous neighbors didn't know where the flames were coming from but snapped some pictures of the sight. Some of those pictures were e-mailed to Channel 11. Our news team had to find out what's behind the fire.

Several measures have been taken to protect residents.

Among incidents, the leaking well caused several evacuations on Monday.

A 103-year-old woman was evacuated from her house when gas escaped into her basement.

Dayton Elementary was also evacuated as a precautionary measure. Students were permitted to return to classes Wednesday morning.
