Allegheny County, Comcast Launch 'Fugitive Files On Demand'

Posted: 6:38 pm EDT March 20, 2008Updated: 7:06 pm EDT March 20, 2008

Police are taking to the airwaves to catch Allegheny County’s most wanted fugitives.

It's called Fugitive Files On Demand, and it means many television viewers will be able to see Allegheny County's most wanted anytime.

It's a joint partnership between Comcast and the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department. Its been successful in Philadelphia, Delaware and Maryland, and they are hoping for success in Pittsburgh.

The idea is to get more eyes on the fugitives in hopes someone knows where they are.

“Being able to do this is going to give us a little bit more information, make our job a little easier. And we know partnering with the community is one way to defeat crime and make more arrests with less effort and time," said Allegheny County Sheriff William Mullen.

There are approximately 25,000 outstanding warrants in Allegheny County. The majority are minor summary offenses. The most serious offenders will be put on TV with more to come.

Mullen explained, “We'll put the most egregious offenders on the air. Depending on how the program goes and grows, we'll be able to put more on the air and hopefully probably have an ‘apprehended’ page or something like that."

When it comes to apprehending suspects, the sheriff said to just leave that to law enforcement.

“We ask the community not get involved in making the arrest but merely giving us the information. They remain anonymous. These people are already wanted on warrants, probably because they had already been obtained. People will not have to testify or be identified. All we are asking is for the community's help," said Mullen.

To find it, go to "On Demand." The fugitive files will be under the "Your Town and News and Information" folders.
