PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh's 16th annual Race for the Cure brought out 3,000 breast cancer survivors. They were easy to spot because they were all wearing pink.More than 36,000 marchers and walkers jammed Schenley Park, raising more than $2 million to treat, research and hopefully cure the disease.Optimism was everywhere, even among two sisters, Barbara McGrath and Bonnie Skidmore, who were diagnosed in the past six months.Barbara McGrath said, "I feel very fortunate because I've had my radiation treatment and my future looks really good."Bonnie Skidmore said of her sister, "She's had the exposure and was able to help me through it and to tell me what I'm up against. So we have kind of a bond thing now."Those who have passed away were not forgotten. They were memorialized in pink signs bearing their names. Charley Vanachoski walked proudly for his mother-in-law, a survivor. He said, “Being a part of something big, it's a great cause. I think it helps all survivors."Among the early finishers in the 5K run was Allderdice High School principal Robert Scherer, who led a team of staff members touched by the disease. Scherer told reporter Stu Brown, "I think all of us have one, myself included, and I think everyone is running for somebody personally. But collectively we really had to do this."Channel 11's Timyka Artist, herself a survivor, ran in her third annual race here since her diagnosis. She said, "Being diagnosed with something like breast cancer gives you a whole new perspective on life and it really teaches you to live again."Stu Brown spotted many slogans at the race, but one that seemed to have special meaning for breast cancer survivors, their families and supporters had just five words--"Let's win this fight together."
