WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Stay out, stay alive -- that is the warning for children and people who like to spend a lot of time outdoors. The warning concerns the dangers posed by abandoned mines.The Department of Environmental Protection kicked off the state's 2008 "Stay Out, Stay Alive" campaign on Monday. It's designed to draw attention to the hidden dangers that exist at active and abandoned mine sites and quarries.Since 2000, 31 people have died trespassing in mines and quarries in 19 Pennsylvania counties, including one this year.
Nationwide, 154 people have been killed since 2003. Ninety-six of the deaths have been due to drowning.May is considered the third-deadliest month for mine-related accidents, followed behind July and June.LINK:
