PITTSBURGH -- The wait is over as Point State Park gets ready to reopen earlier than planned on May 30. After a year and a half of renovation, the park will be almost 65 percent open to the public after a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring Gov. Ed Rendell and other public figures. The community will be able to enjoy the front of the park and have access to part of the fields by the fountain. The Woodlands will not be open until closer to fall because of planting issues. The park will be opened for the Dollar Bank Jamboree, a country music festival taking place on July 26. However, it will miss the Three Rivers Arts Festival and Three Rivers Regatta this year. These events will be located elsewhere downtown including Gateway Center and on the North Shore.Although the park is opening next week, projects are not yet complete and renovations will carry on throughout 2009.Current and future renovations include new pathways, lighting, bike racks, benches, a café and patio as well as a new stage and electric outlets for events. There will also be alterations to the water's edge that include steps reaching the river and an area for small boats.
