Police Say Gas Siphoning Fueled High-Speed Chase

Police say a high-speed chase that came to a crashing end in Ross Wednesday morning started when the suspect was caught siphoning gas.

An officer patrolling the Clover Hill Golf Course early this morning spotted a Humvee near a 500-gallon gas tank. When the officer tried to talk to the driver, he took off.

Soon, police from Franklin Park and McCandless were chasing the Humvee.

One witness who said he was nearly hit by the Humvee on McKnight Road said the vehicle was going in excess of 100 mph.

The chase ended when the driver slammed into a tree in the parking lot of the Shoppes at Northway. The Humvee rolled several times before coming to a stop.

Police said 18-year-old Mark Follen, of Moon Township, was behind the wheel. Follen was rushed to Allegheny General Hospital with leg injuries.

Police then went back to the golf course and found gas-siphoning equipment at the gas tank where Follen’s Humvee was first spotted.

The golf course superintendent later told Channel 11 News that 68 gallons of gas was missing from the tank.

Follen will face several charges when he’s released from the hospital, including reckless endangerment, theft, and possession of instruments of crime.

No officers were injured during the chase.
