CHURCHILL, Pa. -- The Woodland Hills School Board voted 5-4 to suspend operations at East Junior High School in Turtle Creek. The move, which has been discussed for more than two years, means 272 students will attend West Junior High in the fall. The decision helped balance the district $85 million budget, but critics said it comes at a high price."There has to be a more creative way to get funds," said one opponent. "If you think we had problems before, you put 27 kids into a classroom and it will be worse."The Woodland Hills District dealt with several incidents of violence this year, including one in which a teacher was injured trying to break up a fight.Supporters said the move will save the district $800,000 and is necessary to offset rising fuel and health care costs."This district will rise and be the best district in the state. You can take that to the bank," said new superintendent Dr. Walter Calinger.School Board President Marilyn Messina suggested meetings between students, parents and staff at both schools to better learn the transfer process. No date has been set.
